Shawn Michaels won the 1996 Royal Rumble match to become the 2nd superstar to win 2 consecutive Rumble matches. Though he did not get an opportunity to main event after winning the Royal Rumble in 1995, Michaels made sure he got his main event spot next year.
The Heart Break Kid defeated Bret 'The Hitman' Hart in a 60-minute Iron Man match to emerge as the new WWF World Heavyweight Champion.

Michaels had retired from in-ring competition after his defeat to the Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI, however, he came out of his retirement last year at WWE Crown Jewel. His last appearance on WWE TV was during Ric Flair's 70th birthday party celebration which was gatecrashed by the Animal, Batista.
