Why would WWE have Lana cheat on Rusev with Dolph Ziggler?

Another weird point in WWE programming was when they decided to have Rusev fire Lana as his manager and kick her out of his life. Not only was it insanely unbelievable due to the fact that they were in a relationship at the time, but it also blossomed into an affair storyline between Lana and Dolph Ziggler.

Of course, the storyline was eventually nixed after leaked photos of Lana's engagement to Rusev emerged on TMZ. In fact, it was one of the first times WWE choose to portray Lana this way on television, which really hurt her character overall and just made things uncomfortable.

In the end, it was a low hanging fruit idea and it didn't make much sense, to begin with. Maybe it would have been a little bit easier to believe if it was back when pro wrestling was portrayed as real, but in today's WWE it just seems like a punishment. Furthermore, it was a very bad way to portray Lana's character.
