What's the story?
Rey Mysterio was supposed to face Jushin Thunder Liger at Strong Style Evolved. However, he could not compete owing to an injury and got into an angle with Will Ospreay and Marty Scurll.
According to Dave Meltzer from Wrestling Observer, if Mysterio does indeed come to WWE, it'll either be in the fall or in late summer. We thank Ringside News for the transcript of Dave Meltzer's analysis.
In case you didn't know...
Rey Mysterio is one of the most celebrated Cruiserweights in the history of professional wrestling. He surprised the world when he showed up at the Royal Rumble this year, and although he could not win the match, he had the internet community buzzing.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
There was much speculation about a return to WWE in due time, and even Mysterio expressed his interest in returning to face Finn Balor and AJ Styles.
The heart of the matter
According to Dave Meltzer, there are three New Japan Pro Wrestling matches that Rey Mysterio will wrestle before he possibly heads to WWE. The first of these is with Jushin Thunder Liger, in a dream rematch of a contest that happened two decades ago.
The second of the matches is due to happen with Will Ospreay, who challenged Mysterio to a match. And the last one is with Marty Scurll who unmasked him in the middle of the ring during the live proceedings. So it'll be quite a while before Mysterio does go to WWE if such is indeed the plan.
What's next?
Rey Mysterio is yet to recover from injury. Once he does, we're sure he'll dazzle New Japan with his array of impressive moves. And then, if we're lucky, we'll see him in WWE.
Author's take
I'd love to see Mysterio have a run on the main roster. I feel that he'd be far better served on RAW or SmackDown Live, than on 205 Live.
AJ Styles vs. Rey Mysterio would be one for the ages.
