What's the story?

It has been revealed by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer that Rey Mysterio might have sustained a bicep injury while wrestling a tag match for the US promotion Northeast Wrestling.

In case you didn’t know…

Rey Mysterio made a surprise appearance as the #27 entrant at the WWE Royal Rumble event last month, to a huge pop from the audience. Though it was initially thought to be a one-off deal only, Mysterio has recently been rumored to be negotiating a part-time agreement with WWE.

The rumors also revealed that Triple H was the point person from WWE's side to handle the contract negotiations. Mysterio is also speculated to be one of the people in the running to wrestle a match opposite John Cena at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans this year, but this seems to be untrue at this point, as Cena is still believed to have a program with The Undertaker.

The heart of the matter

Meltzer reports that the former World Heavyweight Champion was working a tag team match alongside Flip Gordon, against the team of Joey Mercury and Caleb Konley for Northeast Wrestling promotion in Waterbury, Connecticut, when the injury occurred.

Mysterio is said to have injured his left bicep badly, and those who saw him after the match reported heavy swelling in his arm, though the extent of the injury is still unknown at this point.

The report also says that Mysterio told Mercury about the injury during the match and just as Mercury was about to stop the match and signal for the finish, Mysterio set up a double 619 and went on to pin Konley after a splash from the top rope, ending the bout.

What's next?

More details about the injury are yet to surface. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates.
