What's the story?
NoDQ.com is reporting on a recent interview that announcer Josh Mathews had with PWInsider. They discussed the current naming rights situation regarding Anthem and Global Force Wrestling, as well as their upcoming pay-per-view, Bound For Glory using Impact Wrestling instead of GFW in promotional content.
In case you didn't know...
This past April, Impact Wrestling announced a merger with Global Force Wrestling.
Beginning in June, they incorporated the GFW name brand with the company, thus completing a re-branding, but Anthem never purchased GFW from Jeff Jarrett which is causing the confusion today.
The heart of the matter
Josh Mathews gave the following quote in the interview with PWInsider regarding the name branding:
"You know, I wish I could tell you everything and tell you that 'this is what it's going to be', because I think we did a great job in January of getting rid of TNA, of getting rid of that brand and becoming Impact, then becoming GFW," said Matthews.
You can clearly see here that Mathews was not a fan of the TNA brand name, but was content with the simple change to Impact Wrestling, then Global Force Wrestling. In regards to Bound For Glory and beyond, Mathews said the following:
"Now, you're right, if you look at that graphic, it says Impact Bound for Glory, and that's the brand we are bringing to Ottawa. Those are the tapings that is coming to Ottawa. That's the show that's coming, Impact. I know that doesn't really answer a whole lot of questions, but that's what we're doing. That's what we're bringing up there. That's what you're going to see and after what you see on November 5th, to be determined, I suppose."
From this quote, it seems that Mathews is just as confused as the rest of the wrestling fans. Does this mean Anthem is trying to remove Jarrett completely and not go forward with Global Force Wrestling? Is the entire situation up in the air while Jarrett is on an indefinite leave of absence?
What's next?
The 13th edition of Bound For Glory is the next pay-per-view for Impact Wrestling. The event is scheduled to take place on November 5th, and the main event has current World Heavyweight Champion Eli Drake defending his title against newcomer Johnny Impact (Johnny Mundo/Morrison).
Author's take
Josh's comments basically sum up Anthem's ownership of Impact Wrestling in a nutshell. No one knows what's going on because Anthem has not done a good job in running this company.
Ever since it came out that Anthem was looking to sell off Impact Wrestling/Global Force Wrestling, things continue to get weirder every day with this organization.
