After the brand-split in July 2016, Raw needed a new world championship after the WWE title went to SmackDown Live. The GM and the Commissioner introduced the Universal title and the inaugural champion would be determined at SummerSlam. Seth Rollins was named as the first contestant and the second would be determined by a series of matches. Finn Balor defeated Roman Reigns in the finals to face Rollins at SummerSlam.

Balor vs Rollins was a great match, but the crowd turned on the match upon seeing the design of the Universal title. Balor won the match after a hard-fought battle. Balor had to relinquish the title the next night as his shoulder was injured during the match with Rollins.
