The former WWE talent, who wrestled a handful of dark matches for the company, made his impact wrestling debut in 2015 and has since steadily risen up the ranks. He won the vacant Impact title in a Gauntlet For Gold 20-man gauntlet match that had all the top stars of the roster vying for the title.
The heart of the matter
Drake revealed on the podcast that the company's directive of his world title victory caught him off guard. The news came at a time when he was contemplating his future and nearly two weeks before the match was set to be taped.
"I was almost like 'guys, I'm here, what are we doing with me?' And then it was all of a sudden like 'here you go!' I was like 'What the? Ok. All right. Cool!' But I'm not complaining in the least because I think that kind of surprises work out really well"
The champion delved in further into his first world title win and stamped his approval on the company's surprise call. He said that the fans would have expected a debuting John Morrison (Johnny Impact in Impact) to win the 20-man gauntlet match only to see a twist right at the end.
He concluded by saying that he is digging the perks and responsibilities that come along with being a champion.
What's next?
Drake will put the title on the line against Johnny Impact at the upcoming Bound for Glory PPV on 5th November. All the titles will be on the line along with many star-studded matches forming a promising card.
Author's take
Drake is one of this missed opportunities that had all the tools of making it big in the WWE. He possesses the perfect blend of microphone skills, in-ring talent, and charisma to succeed in the WWE.
WWE's loss turned out to be Impact's gain and they capitalized on it like no one's business. Drake thoroughly deserves the accolades coming his way but will Johnny Impact be the one to end it all at BFG 2017?
