What’s the story?
This past Saturday, Ohio Valley Wrestling decided to host a show and raised money for WWE Tough Enough season III winner Matt Cappotelli, who is currently in a battle with brain cancer.
In case you didn’t know…
OVW was the primary developmental for the WWE (Then WWF) for eight years. From the year 2000-2008 OVW had produced a lot of young talented men and women, who are now some of the biggest legends in the wrestling business.
During its connection with the WWE, OVW helped superstars such as CM Punk, John Cena, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, Ruby Riot, Natalya, Mickie James and more to elevate and become a bigger star in the sport of wrestling.
Matt Cappotelli was first signed by WWE after he had won the third season of Tough Enough. During his short stint in the WWE, he teamed up with John Henningan and made various appearances from the year 2003-2004.
Cappotelli was soon sent to OVW in order to improve his in-ring skills as well as his mic skills. He soon started showing signs of improvement and by 2005 he had already won the OVW Heavyweight Championship. After capturing the heavyweight belt down at OWV, WWE was planning to bring him back to the main roster, but things didn’t go according to plan as Cappotelli was diagnosed with a grade 2/3 astrocytoma.
The heart of the matter
This past Saturday OVW decided to host a benefit event for Matt Cappotelli in order to support him through his battle with cancer, which he had once beaten 10 years ago. The promotion raised a total of $6,000 in order to assist their former World Champion.
Cappotelli had once got rid of the cancer and the former Tough Enough winner underwent surgery recently. But reportedly the brain cancer returned last summer in a much more aggressive manner and as it stands it remains as the most deadly form of brain cancer.
Tickets for the event were sold for a total of 15 dollars per person, this past Saturday and every dollar went to Cappotelli and his family.
What’s next?
With OVW giving their best in order to support Matt, the only thing we can hope from here is that the former OVW champ undergoes surgery and hopefully beats cancer once again.
Author’s take
It is great to see OVW caring for their former World Champion and giving their best in order to help him win this battle against brain cancer. We here at Sportskeeda also wish Matt Cappotelli the best of luck and express our best wishes to him and his family.
