WWE fans eagerly await Netflix's release of its docuseries titled "Mr.McMahon," which delves into the life of former Chairman of WWE, Vince McMahon. The six-episode series drops on the streaming service on September 25, and McMahon released a statement ahead of its release.
Taking to X/Twitter, Vince McMahon released a statement expressing his disappointment with the legitimacy of the documentary and the picture it paints of himself. The statement reads:
"Unfortunately, based on an early partial cut I've seen, this doc falls short and takes the predictable path of conflating the 'Mr. McMahon' character with my true self, Vince. The title and promos alone make that evident."
The documentary's release comes amid an ongoing lawsuit filed by Janel Grant regarding alleged sexual assault and sex trafficking claims against McMahon. The series will include this, and WWE's former Chairman claims it uses the lawsuit to defame his character.
Various pro wrestling names are set to appear in the documentary, including McMahon's son-in-law and WWE's Chief Content Officer, Triple H. Other names featured include Hulk Hogan, John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Bret Hart.
Grant doesn't appear in the Netflix series, but the sixth and final episode covers the lawsuit. McMahon served as the company's CEO for 40 years before resigning in 2022 and briefly returning last year. Endeavor took ownership last September and merged the organization with UFC to form TKO Group Holdings.
McMahon served as an Executive Chairman of the new company. However, he later resigned from the position after Janel Grant's lawsuit.
Ex-WWE commentator Jim Ross says Vince McMahon involvement will make or break Netflix documentary
Jim Ross worked closely with Vince McMahon during his tenure with the company. The legendary commentator knew the controversial businessman well but, somewhat surprisingly, wasn't interviewed for the documentary series.
JR, now working for AEW, emphasized the importance of McMahon's involvement in the Netflix docuseries. He feels the streaming service has a hell of a story to tell while praising its executive producer Bill Simmons, who also worked on the successful series Tiger King.
"I’m anxious to see how much in depth on the production side, the storytelling side, the screenwriting side that Vince is going to have in this thing. He can make it or break it," he said. [H/T Fightful Select].
It appears McMahon's involvement didn't allow him to control the storytelling aspect of the series. Several teasers have dropped ahead of its release, which shows him reflecting on his tenure as Chairman. He was interviewed in January 2024 before he resigned for a second time.
