They say you need to hit the lowest of lows to pick yourself up. A man’s character is defined by his defiance and reluctance to give up. In history, we’ve seen many personalities who rose from the ashes, and when everything else looked bleak, they showed character, and made amends with their past.
In professional wrestling, many performers have seen the dark side of the business, but only few have ever made it back from the abyss. We can talk about the Shawn Michaels’ and the Jake Roberts, who were two of the very few performers to have turned a clean slate, but there is one other performer who has seen the highs and lows of professional wrestling, and turned his life around for the better.
Growing up, very few performers would have captivated the wrestling fans quite like the daredevil, Jeff Hardy. Jeff along with his brother Matt was a part of a tag team that revolutionized professional wrestling. The innovators of the ladder match went on to become one of the greatest tag teams of all time, and set standards in the then WWF.
With Jeff being one of the biggest crowd favourites, the WWE wanted to capitalize on Jeff’s increasing popularity. With Jeff Hardy getting himself over with the WWE fanbase, it looked like Jeff was inching closer to his childhood dream of becoming the WWE champion. Then, in a moment, everything was taken away from Jeff.
Jeff was addicted to drugs, and this halted his career in professional wrestling. Hardy was soon released from the WWE, and Jeff found his way to TNA. Jeff also began pursuing other interests, and with TNA’s lighter schedule, things looked bright for the young daredevil.
With Hardy’s personal demons catching up with him once again, he was released from TNA, and with WWE showing interest in Hardy, he resigned with the company where he initially found fame. Jeff was immediately pushed, and WWE put the prestigious Intercontinental championship on Jeff Hardy. Hardy then teamed up with his brother once again and won the Tag Team championships. WWE had enough faith in Jeff to give him one more chance in the main event scene.
Jeff Hardy, although still plagued by his personal demons, won the WWE championship in 2008, and the fans were genuinely happy for Jeff. After years of putting his body on the line for the fans, Jeff earned the opportunity to become the face of the company, but he lost the WWE title in ’09, and was involved in a feud with his brother which culminated in Jeff defeating Matt in an “I Quit” match.
Jeff then defeated Edge to win the World Heavyweight championship, but Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to pin Jeff for the title. This set the tone for a personal rivalry between Punk and Jeff, which clicked immediately due to their different life styles, and Punk preaching Jeff to become a “better man”.
Jeff would beat Punk during their rivalry to win the World title one more time, but with Jeff and WWE agreeing to part ways, Jeff dropped the belt back to Punk, and lost a steel cage match on an episode of Smackdown, with the stipulation that Jeff would leave the WWE if he lost.
Jeff bid adieu to the WWE fans, and took some time off to heal from his nagging injuries. Jeff would once again end up in TNA and became the TNA world champion, turning heel in the process. That was when Jeff’s past came back to haunt him.
Jeff showed up in no condition to perform during Victory Road PPV in ’11, and lost the bout to Sting. This outraged the fans and the wrestling fraternity, who wanted Jeff to be blacklisted from the industry. Jeff took some time off and returned to TNA later that year, and wanted the fans and his peers to forgive him.
Jeff Hardy is perhaps the most loved and hated person at the same time in professional wrestling who derailed his own career. As Jeff came to terms with his own reality, he has taken a different approach since, and has remained clean.
Jeff Hardy is known as the “charismatic enigma” for a reason. With a unique style and persona, Jeff Hardy was something that professional wrestling needed. There was a time when it looked like professional wrestling wasn’t what Jeff needed, but with Jeff finally cutting corners for the better, one has to believe that the WWE Universe hasn’t seen the last of Jeff Hardy in the company.
