Yuvraj Singh Dhesi popularly known as Jinder Mahal is a Canadian professional wrestler of Indian descentary. He is currently signed with WWE, who appears on Raw as the leader of Indus Sher. He was born in a wrestling family and was brought into wrestling by his uncle Gama Singh. He started his pro-wrestling training at the age of 16 and had two years of training in his native Calgary. He made his pro wrestling debut at Premier Martial Arts Wrestling (PMW) under the ring name Raj Dhesi. He wrestled primarily in Canada for the first six years in promotions such as Prairie Wrestling Alliance, and Great North Wrestling.
In 2010, Dhesi participated in WWE tryout and was signed to work under WWE’s developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), where he adopted his Punjabi gimmick and the name Jinder Mahal. After wrestling for a year in FCW, Mahal was called for his WWE television debut in SmackDown. He stated that he is the brother-in-law (Kayfabe) of The Great Khali and had a cat and mouse kind of relationship with them. They teamed up and tried to capture the WWE Tag Team Championship, but failed and the alliance was broken. Mahal had filed pursuits for the Intercontinental Championship and United States Championship. He tried various alliances and storylines, but he was stuck in the lower mid-card.
Jinder Mahal then started appearing on the newly branded NXT and participated in the Gold Rush Tournament to crown the first ever NXT Champion. Mahal advanced to the finals and lost to Seth Rollins. Mahal soon came back to the main roster and formed an alliance with Drew McIntyre and Heath Slater dubbing themselves as ‘3MB’. The trip had various feuds and storylines on Raw, but they were booked for a number of losses. Mahal got released from contract and went on to wrestle in the Independent Circuits for two years.
Mahal was rehired by WWE in 2016, where he came out with a more masculine and ripped look, by losing 20 pounds. He adopted a “peaceful” gimmick and was accompanied by The Bollywood Boyz. In 2017, Mahal got his first major push of his career, which made him the WWE Champion for the very first time. Mahal became the 50th WWE Champion of the company and the first WWE Champion from Indian descent. He successfully defended his championship for almost six-months and dropped it to AJ Styles.
He soon became the United States Champion, but it didn’t last longer as Jeff Hardy took the championship from him in eight days. Mahal had a number of storylines and feuds, but went down the line. He suffered a number of injuries and had a long absence. In 2021 he returned to the exclusive live show for India, WWE Superstar Spectacle. He was on and off from television a number of times and finally managed to be on television leading Indus Sher on Raw.
