John Cena was one of the first wrestlers to declare his entry in the Royal Rumble match, but the latest from WWE suggests that may not happen.
The 16-time world champion may no longer be eligible to compete in the match due to an ankle injury he sustained last week on Monday Night Raw.
Cena competed in a fatal four-way match against Baron Corbin, Drew McIntyre and eventual winner Finn Balor to determine who would face Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
The injury to Cena's ankle was said to be caused by Drew McIntyre who used the Ankle Lock on Cena towards the end of Raw's main event last week.
WWE said the following about Cena's injury and his status for the Royal Rumble:
The Cenation Leader faced Finn Balor, Baron Corbin and Drew McIntyre for the right to challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at the WWE Royal Rumble event. As seen in the video above, the injury seemingly occurred when McIntyre trapped Cena in the ankle lock submission hold. Cena can then be seen favoring his left ankle while leaving the ring after Raw went off the air.
The injury was exacerbated earlier today as Cena was training his legs at the gym, which has cast doubt on whether he will be able to compete in the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match this Sunday.
The company has not specifically mentioned whether he would be okay in time, which has caused many to wonder whether more will be revealed on this week's episode of Raw.
Majority of Cena's WrestleMania rumors had him facing Lars Sullivan or Drew McIntyre, which probably meant an angle may have been planned for the Rumble match.
The worst-case scenario for his injury would probably mean Cena missing the Royal Rumble and the Elimination Chamber, but that is pure speculation.
