In late 2021, Kayla Inlay made her pro-wrestling debut at AEW Dark under the ring name Xtine Kay and lost to The Bunny. In February 2022, she made her WWE debut under the real name Kayla in the NXT brand losing to Sarray. She was soon repackaged as Kiana James and adopted a heel businesswoman gimmick.

James debuted in the NXT Breakout Tournament in 2022 and lost to Roxanne Perez in the first round. She had her first televised win at NXT Level up.
