#2: Batista cashes-in his ‘I-helped-beat-up-Bret-Hart’ favour – Elimination Chamber 2010
Batista’s heel run from October 2009 to May 2010 was the best work of his career. His change from bland good guy to an egotistical heel was a revelation. Despite being 290 pounds and 6’6, the heel Batista would cower away and would demand that “the spotlight” be on him. His segments were the highlight of the show; it’s easy to see why Dave Bautista is now such a big star in Hollywood.
After Batista assisted Vince McMahon in beating up a 50-year-old Bret Hart, McMahon rewarded him by giving ‘The Animal’ a title shot right after John Cena had regained the WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber bout. This was a carbon copy of Edge’s MITB cash-in on Cena at New Years Revolution 2006. While the moment lacked originality, it did help further establish Batista as a low-down dirty heel.
It’s a shame that this version of Batista only stuck around for a few more months. WWE’s loss is Hollywood’s gain.
