This week’s episode of WWE SmackDown saw a 30-year-old superstar pick up a big win in a massive feud. However, it wasn’t a clean win and the wrestler was approached by interviewer Byron Saxton who highlighted this issue. However, the arrogant star called Saxton a loser in return. The star in question is Carmelo Hayes.
SmackDown's first-draft pick this year, Hayes, faced Andrade for the sixth time in a head-to-head series where he trailed 3-2. Ahead of the match, Melo ambushed LA Knight while the luchador was speaking with him about the disrespect he felt last week.
While the WWE US Champion was knocked out cold, he later returned during the closing moments of the match to get back at Carmelo Hayes. Andrade turned to The Megastar and asked him to leave, which allowed Melo to sneakily roll him up and pick up a pinfall win to level the competition at 3-3.
Mentioning this chaos caused by Hayes’ attack on Knight earlier in the night, Byron Saxton noted that Melo couldn’t be feeling good about the win. Retorting to this, Melo said that the interviewer had the mentality of a loser and a win was a win. He also emphasized that he was determined to take the US Championship belt off LA Knight.
“Hey bro, you sound like a real loser. Bro, a win is a win, no matter how you get the win. Look, there's only one person that wants that US Championship more than me today. And that's me tomorrow.”
Carmelo Hayes had previously gotten into a brawl against WWE Speed Champion Andrade
Carmelo Hayes follows a particular model of provoking his opponents to get under their skin and using it to his advantage. While this was visible during his earlier feud with Randy Orton, the same pattern is repeating with another celebrated veteran, Andrade.
Last week, after the luchador’s title shot loss against LA Knight, Melo mocked the luchador. He also stated that had it been “Him” against The Megastar, he wouldn’t have dropped the match. This provoked Andrade to attack him, resulting in a backstage brawl.
Now, Hayes has eliminated Andrade’s head-to-head advantage against him and has forced LA Knight to lock onto him. Thus, Melo has created a title shot possibility for himself despite losing the No. 1 Contender’s match against the WWE Speed Champion. It would be interesting to see if he gets an official match and possibly win his first main roster title.
