WWE is in the middle of one of its most successful runs at present. It seems that many current and former stars want to return to the company.
One star who is open to making a comeback is Zack Ryder, who is now known as Matt Cardona. The four-time champion recently spoke with Inside The Ropes and made it clear that if he were to return to WWE, he wouldn't perform under the Zack Ryder moniker.
“I am so grateful for Zack Ryder, it set me up for this whole independent Matt Cardona run, but it is the past. Maybe this isn’t the best analogy but Scott Hall didn’t go back as Razor Ramon. We still knew it was him, but listen, it’s 2024, everyone knows I’m Zack Ryder. But if I were to go back, it has to be Matt Cardona. That’s the value, right? Zack Ryder is a part of that story. You can still make Zack Ryder figures, still make trading cards, put me in the game, get me some royalty checks as Zack Ryder. But the days of Zack Ryder and the 'Woo Woo Woo' are dead,” Cardona said.
Cardona has become The Indy God since his WWE release, winning titles in numerous promotions such as GCW, TNA Wrestling, and the NWA. The 39-year-old's wife, Chelsea Green, returned to the company at Royal Rumble 2023, with many fans believing that Cardona would also return.
During his stint with the global juggernaut, the former Zack Ryder won the Intercontinental, United States, and Tag Team titles. Will Triple H bring him back for another run? Only time will tell.
Zack Ryder was part of WWE for 14 years ahead of his release
Matt Cardona has seemingly bid farewell to his former character after portraying Zack Ryder on WWE TV from 2006 until his release in 2020. The character was a fan favorite and even had an Internet Championship that made him popular among fans worldwide.
The Indy God is a different character altogether and would open the door to several storylines if the management allowed Cardona to bring his heel gimmick to World Wrestling Entertainment TV.
