The wrestling world was disappointed with Mercedes Mone's match against Willow Nightingale at NJPW Resurgence.
Nightingale is presently under contract with AEW and also fights for Ring of Honor. She has also competed in the independent wrestling scene for many years.
Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks, was a WWE Women's Grand Slam Champion. Since leaving the company, she won the IWGP Women's Championship by conquering KAIRI at NJPW Battle in the Valley. However, Mayu Iwatani defeated Mone for the title on April 23 at the STARDOM All-Star Grand Queendom show.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling held a one-night competition at Resurgence to determine the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women's Champion. Mercedes Mone upset Stephanie Vaquer in the first stage with the Mone-Maker after a hard-fought match. Meanwhile, Willow Nightingale of AEW advanced to the finals by defeating Momo Kohgo.
A top AEW star just called one of his colleagues 'spoiled' and 'narcissistic' HERE.
The main attraction included a match between Nightingale and the former WWE Superstar in the tournament finals. They fought back and forth, with Nightingale emerging victorious over the erstwhile Sasha Banks.
In a recently resurfaced video, Sasha Banks was welcomed by the audience in what was said to be a great pop.
Fans on Twitter were quick enough to point out that Mone received an underwhelming response during a championship match.
Some wrestling fans noted that there were plenty of empty seats in the arena during Mone's entrance into the ring. People also noticed that Sasha Banks did not receive a major pop at the NJPW Resurgence show.
Meanwhile, one fan only cared about the former WWE star being happy while wrestling.
Mercedes Mone potentially injured during her NJPW Championship match
Willow was declared the winner after a tremendous battle, but supporters were concerned that a possible injury would put a dent in the occasion.
Mercedes appeared to damage her leg at one point during the match, as she could not put much weight on it during several instances. The bout ended with Willow becoming the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women's Champion, and Mercedes Mone was brought back to the locker room, clearly in pain.
Fans believe the injury is not kayfabe based on the steps taken following the bout and the fact that it was shorter than many expected. It remains to be seen what is next for the former WWE Superstar following a potential injury. It also remains to be seen when Mone will make a full return to the ring.
