Styles was scheduled to face James Ellsworth on SmackDown Live

WWE World Champion AJ Styles was unable to defend his WWE championship against James Ellsworth on this past week’s SmackDown Live. The champion had picked up a minor injury in his ankle when he faced Dean Ambrose at TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs and he shared a picture on Instagram of his visit to a hospital.

The Phenomenal One’s photo featured a heavily wrapped left ankle as he reportedly visited a rehab centre in Atlanta. The 39-year-old stated that he was close to 100% fitness, which would be great news for SmackDown Live fans.

Styles had been part of an incredible main event at TLC where he showed yet again why he is one of the best in the world. The former TNA star was up against Ambrose for the title in a Ladder match and even though the pair put up a great show, Styles needed a bit of help to keep his title.

James Ellsworth pushed Ambrose onto a pile of tables, opening the door for Styles to win the match. Ellsworth later claimed this was a tactic for him to claim the WWE World Championship since he had a great record against the Phenomenal One.

Styles, for his part, has seen a meteoric rise in the WWE since making his debut at the Royal Rumble in 2016. The “Face that runs the place” had great bouts against Chris Jericho and was part of the Bullet Club with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson before he picked up the title at Backlash as he beat Ambrose.

The Lunatic Fringe’s attempts at reclaiming his title have been met with firm resistance and a bit of luck from Styles but there is no doubting his ability. The veteran wrestler certainly has been getting a great ovation from the WWE Universe ever since he signed for them and it only is a matter of time before he is back and raring to go.
