Bret Hart has been outspoken about his problems with several people in the wrestling industry over the years. WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff, Hart's former boss in WCW, recently fired back at The Hitman.
Hart worked for WCW between 1997 and 2000, after leaving WWE under controversial circumstances. The Canadian was widely viewed as one of the best wrestlers in the world at the time. However, he failed to replicate his success from the Stamford-based promotion in WCW.
In 2017, Hart said on Notsam Wrestling that Bischoff "was the worst loser maggot that ever got into wrestling." Seven years on, the former WCW executive explained on Wrestling Life Online why he does not take the two-time WWE Hall of Famer's criticisms seriously:
"Bret's always been the kind of guy that's got to be mad at somebody," Bischoff said. "He hates Vince [McMahon], he hates Shawn [Michaels], he hates [Earl] Hebner, he hates [Hulk] Hogan, he hates Bischoff, he hates [Bill] Goldberg, he hates this guy. Bret has a tendency to blame the entire world for whatever goals Bret hasn't achieved that he thought he should." [1:08:22 – 1:08:39]
Although Bischoff admits Hart's WCW booking could have been better, he thinks the wrestler should also hold himself accountable:
"I don't mean to be cruel or non-feeling about it, but Bret needs to man the f**k up and accept some responsibility for some of the decisions and choices that he made." [1:08:43 – 1:08:54]
Bret Hart's WCW career ended in 2000 when he was forced to retire due to a concussion. The Hitman has repeatedly accused Goldberg of causing the career-ending injury with a mistimed kick at Starrcade 1999.
Eric Bischoff highlights another Bret Hart issue in WCW
Shortly before joining WCW, Bret Hart was at the center of the Montreal Screwjob at WWE Survivor Series 1997. The Hitman refused to lose the WWE Championship against his real-life rival Shawn Michaels at the event.
As a result, then-Chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment Vince McMahon booked Michaels as the winner at the last minute, without informing Hart. Eric Bischoff believes the double-cross led Hart to suffer from depression when he arrived in WCW:
"That affected Bret so much emotionally because he was so overly invested in his Canadian hero legendary status that it hurt him emotionally. When he got to WCW he was depressed." [1:11:43 – 1:11:59]
Hart won seven titles in WCW, including the World Heavyweight Championship twice. He also captured the tag titles with Goldberg once and the United States Heavyweight Championship four times.
