Bret Hart returned to WWE on the September 9 episode of WWE RAW in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Unfortunately for the Hall of Famer, his homecoming was crashed by World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.
The Ring General threw barbs at The Hitman, claiming that Goldberg is his favorite wrestler, a comment he later revoked at Bad Blood when he confronted the WCW legend. As you may know, Bret blames Da Man for botching a move during their match at the 1999 Starrcade event that ended Hart's in-ring career. On RAW, the World Heavyweight Champion simply wanted to insult the Canadian legend, and the Hall of Famer did not retort to the Austrian in the segment itself. Instead, the whole thing was a setup to propel Gunther's program with Sami Zayn.
During a recent interview with The Wrestling Classic, Bret Hart responded to WWE using his real-life animosity with Goldberg in his promo with Gunther. The Hitman kept his words to a minimum when asked about it:
"I think Bill [Goldberg] got off light," Hart joked. [From 7:24 to 7:28]
Gunther vs. Goldberg instantly became a topic of conversation among the WWE Universe after their Bad Blood segment in the WCW legend's hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. However, WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff feels Bron Breakker is a more fitting final opponent for the two-time Universal Champion.
Bret Hart also commented on CM Punk and Drew McIntyre paying homage to WrestleMania 13
At WrestleMania 13 in 1997, Bret Hart worked a Submission match with Stone Cold Steve Austin. The bout is hailed today as one of the greatest wrestling contests of all time.
CM Punk and Drew McIntyre's Hell in a Cell encounter at Bad Blood featured a moment when Punk locked the Sharpshooter on a bloodied McIntyre, resembling the iconic WrestleMania match's closing moments. During the same interview with The Wrestling Classic, Bret Hart admitted that it was a "nod of respect" by the two WWE Superstars:
"I did it notice it and I thought it was, I always take those as a nod of respect. I like it. I appreciate it," Hart said. "It still wasn't as good as my Austin match," he added. [From 7:49 to 8:04]
Aside from the World Heavyweight Champion confronting Bret Hart, the RAW segment was also notable for the official announcement of WWE's return to Vancouver for Survivor Series: WarGames on November 30. It remains to be seen whether the Hall of Famer will make another appearance for the Thanksgiving 'Big Four' event.
