CM Punk pushes for a historic match in 2025, and it's not against Seth Rollins

CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins appears to be the headliner for the premiere episode of WWE RAW on Netflix. Although Punk has teased that their rivalry is not a one-and-done deal, he has another big name in mind for a blockbuster contest in 2025.

It is no secret that The Best in the World would love to lock horns with WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin. Although Austin retired in 2003 owing to severe neck injuries he sustained during his career, their paths had crossed before when the legend made non-wrestling appearances on RAW. This got the fans buzzing at the prospect of a match between the two box office draws, but it never materialized.

In 2022, Steve Austin headlined WrestleMania 38 Night One with Kevin Owens, his first match in 19 years. He has since openly stated that if the stars align, he is game to lace up a pair of boots again. During an interview with Nightcap, CM Punk was asked which legend from the past or present he would love to mix it up with. He reiterated that Austin is the one, hinting that it is the only legitimately possible match to go with today:

"One name always comes to mind: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Unfortunately, he had to retire because of injuries, and he had a stroke. Bret Hart's another one. It would be a dream for me because that's a guy that I looked up to as a kid. He helped me get into this sport just from an interest perspective. I could text Bret right now and be like, 'What's up, Bretsky? I have a question. I need some advice,' and he will hit me back up right away. Much love to him. Gotta mention him," Punk said.

CM Punk then named current World Champions of RAW and SmackDown, Gunther and Cody Rhodes, respectively. But then he came back around to The Bionic Redneck as the guy, as far as legends go:

"As far as legends go, the ones that probably aren't going to happen, but they're dream matches, Austin is up there. Austin is number one with a bullet." [From 39:58 onwards]
