CM Punk has commented on whether he had any major concerns after signing a new contract with WWE last year. It's been seven months since he's been back with the company.
The Straight Edge Superstar returned to the global wrestling juggernaut after the Men's WarGames match at Survivor Series. The event took place in his hometown of Chicago, and he got a gigantic pop from the crowd after showing up in the arena. The multi-time world champion made his televised in-ring return several weeks later during the Royal Rumble match.
During a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, CM Punk stated that after he signed with WWE, he was a little concerned about whether people would remember him.
"I'm not sure I had a whole lot of concerns outside, 'Are the people going to remember me?' And that sounds ridiculous but as somebody who's in the public spotlight constantly, I think that's just one of those things. As a performer, you always have that voice in the back of your head that's like, 'Are they going to remember, is this going to be a thing?' and it wound up being - I knew it was going to be a big deal. It wound up being I think way bigger of a deal than any of us realized," said Punk. [3:12-3:45]
CM Punk says Vince McMahon leaving WWE paved the way for his return
Nick Khan and Triple H re-hired the Second City Saint, and he had important conversations with them before he came back. Vince McMahon was still the Executive Chairman of TKO at that time.
Elsewhere in the interview, CM Punk stated that Vince's departure from the company in 2022 was a major factor in his return to WWE.
"Vince being out of the picture, I think, probably illuminated the way. I think that might have been one of the biggest things... It wasn't me, it wasn't him, it was just there's a lot of history there, and all of a sudden one of us is removed from the equation, and I think it changed a lot of things," he said.
CM Punk announced on RAW this week that he is medically cleared to compete. He will take on Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam.
