CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre to feature heel turn and unpopular finish, WWE veteran predicts (Exclusive)

Seth Rollins will be the special guest referee for the much-anticipated CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre match at WWE SummerSlam on August 3. Vince Russo, WWE's head writer in the late 1990s, recently gave his thoughts on how the bout could end.

McIntyre and Rollins made it clear after Punk's November 2023 return to WWE that they did not want him back in the company. The Best in the World was expected to face Rollins at WrestleMania XL in April. However, he missed the event after suffering a triceps injury at the hands of McIntyre at Royal Rumble in January.

As Punk prepares to return to the ring, Russo said on Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing With Russo that the villainous McIntyre will likely win at SummerSlam. He also predicted that Rollins could cost Punk the victory, possibly turning heel in the process:

"Bro, you can't keep beating McIntyre," Russo said. "You can't, bro. And the only way to get out of this is to have Seth scr*w CM Punk. That's the only way to get [out of it]. You cannot beat McIntyre again." [4:27 – 4:43]

Possible aftermath of CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre

Vince Russo was speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling host Dr. Chris Featherstone. Later in the conversation, they questioned whether the heated rivalry between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre would continue beyond SummerSlam.

Featherstone speculated that the two could collide again in a Hell in a Cell match at Badd Blood on October 5:

"I'm not sold, especially with the Hell in a Cell coming up, it seems like we'll get like a Punk-Drew Hell in a Cell, so I'm not sold that this is over with. I do think you have Drew win [at SummerSlam]. Unfortunately, I do think you have CM Punk with the pay-off winning at Hell in a Cell if they have a Hell in a Cell match." [5:20 – 5:44]

WWE has not staged a Badd Blood Premium Live Event since 2004. The three previous Badd Blood shows featured a Hell in a Cell match in the main event.
