Rhodes and Reigns have a long history with one another. At WrestleMania XL, Reigns was dethroned by the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion, who ended The Original Tribal Chief's historic title reign. The year before, the two collided in the main event of WrestleMania 39, with Reigns emerging victorious and retaining the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

At the SummerSlam Premium Live Event, Reigns returned for the first time since losing to Rhodes at WrestleMania XL. Upon his return, he cost Solo Sikoa the Undisputed WWE Championship against The American Nightmare.
Several weeks later, Reigns was taken out by The Bloodline before returning to SmackDown after Rhodes' Steel Cage Match against Sikoa. He once again took the fight to The Bloodline before joining forces with Rhodes to fight a common enemy.
At Bad Blood, Reigns and Rhodes will face the Bloodline duo of Sikoa and Jacob Fatu.
