Damian Priest vs. Seth Rollins outcome causes problems for WWE, veteran says (Exclusive)

Damian Priest will defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank Premium Live Event on July 6. Vince Russo, WWE's former head writer, believes the creative team has a tough task deciding how the match should end.

Priest successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania XL on April 7. Since then, he has retained the World Heavyweight Championship against Jey Uso at Backlash: France, and The Scottish Warrior at Clash at the Castle: Scotland.

Russo discussed Priest's on-screen persona and Rollins' recent return with host Dr. Chris Featherstone on Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing With Russo. He began by questioning whether fans would ever stop singing Rollins' popular theme song.

"Bro, I can't believe that I am saying this, and this is how sad the state of affairs is in professional wrestling, are the marks ever going to get tired of singing that song, bro? Because as long as they want to sing that song, they're gonna send him out there and sing that song, bro," Russo said. [1:29 – 1:53]

Gunther won the King of the Ring Tournament on May 25, meaning he will challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam on August 3.

Russo believes Priest must defeat Rollins at Money in the Bank to avoid having his title reign cut short after three months. However, he also doubts whether Gunther vs. Priest is the right match to book at SummerSlam.

"Bro, Seth absolutely positively does not need that title," Russo continued. "Damian Priest needs that title a lot more than Seth needs that title. The problem is, Chris, bro, they can make something out of Damian Priest and Gunther if they choose to. Not in the current state that Damian Priest is in. And that's what you're looking at and that's what I'm looking at. And looking at this now, this absolutely s*cks, but you guys have put him in this role!" [2:17 – 2:49]

Vince Russo on Damian Priest and Gunther's contrasting characters

In recent months, Damian Priest's actions have not been as villainous as his earlier days as part of The Judgment Day. There has even been speculation that he could become a top babyface and feud with his long-time ally Finn Balor.

Russo thinks Gunther and Priest's slight character changes present WWE's decision-makers with a dilemma ahead of SummerSlam.

"Chris, the last time Gunther had an in-ring after WrestleMania, bro, they were turning him babyface. Remember the people were turning him babyface, so now you've got him stuck kind of like in a middle position," he said. [5:03 – 5:25]
