WWE fans were treated to a delightful surprise on Monday Night RAW last week when Drew McIntyre returned to the company. According to a veteran though, Drew was probably not planned to be brought back to the active scene at this time.
The Scottish Warrior has proved to be one of the most entertaining stars on the roster, especially evidenced by his long feud with CM Punk over the course of this year. His return certainly had the desired effect, with fans screaming his name as he revealed his face while attacking Sami Zayn. However, his return may have been hastened due to Bronson Reed's situation, or so Bill Apter thinks.
Speaking on Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine hosted by Mac Davis, the veteran journalist said:
"Well, I think Drew was brought back earlier than anticipated. I think he was gonna come back during the Royal Rumble. But with the injury that happened to Bronson Reed coming off that cage at the Survivor Series, I think they needed to slip somebody in there who is going to give a buzz to the company again, and he was definitely the right man." Another WWE veteran was not pleased with Drew McIntyre's booking
While WWE fans celebrated The Scottish Warrior's return, Vince Russo was not particularly pleased with how he was booked.
On Legion of RAW, the veteran explained that having Drew going after everyone who fought alongside the OTC at Survivor Series would not make for a good storyline. He stated:
"I hope that's not the storyline. I hope that's not the storyline." He continued, "Are you serious? They are reaching for straws, man. This show was so kabukish man, from top to bottom." [9:47 onwards]
For now, it remains to be seen what is next for Drew McIntyre down the line in WWE.
