Drew McIntyre and WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker's paths have crossed a few times in their careers. Through the lens of the Scottish wrestler, The American Badass is his mentor.
Right off the gate, former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon saw something special in Drew McIntyre, which may have been the reason he considered booking him against arguably the company's biggest asset and locker room leader at the time. Sheamus recounted that the original plan for WrestleMania 26 was for them to lock horns. McIntyre made his debut mere months before the spectacle.
In an interview on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet podcast, Sheamus reflected on winning the WWE Championship in late 2009. He revealed that three matches were being considered for next year's WrestleMania: Sheamus vs. Triple H, Drew McIntyre vs. The Undertaker, and The Miz vs. Shawn Michaels. While he got to work with The Game, Taker and Shawn wound up working together instead in the show's main event, which in turn was the latter's swan song:
"You look back at the Survivor Series which we're touching on [2009], it was Miz, me, and Drew," Sheamus said, referring to their Team Miz vs. Team Morrison at the PLE, where they were the survivors in the match. "The talk at the time was — I was supposed to go with Hunter [Triple H], Drew was supposed to go with Taker, and Miz was supposed to go with Shawn [Michaels]. Then it all switched with Taker and Shawn for WrestleMania 26." [From 16:48 to 17:14]
Ten years later, Drew McIntyre and The Undertaker worked a tag team contest at Extreme Rules 2019, with Shane McMahon and Roman Reigns on each other's corner, respectively. But that was not enough for The Scottish Warrior.
Drew McIntyre still wants to work with The Undertaker
After The Undertaker retired from in-ring competition at WrestleMania 36, where he worked his final match against AJ Styles, Drew McIntyre called out The Deadman.
The former World Heavyweight Champion called out The Undertaker during an interview with Inside The Ropes two years ago. The Scotsman proposed an idea that could work for the veteran, who was working way past his healthy days as an in-ring performer when he retired:
"Come on mate [Undertaker], you can do it, we’ll do one of these cinematic matches if you want, but I know you could do it if you wanted to," McIntyre said.
As seen in the video above, the two did get to work together during McIntyre's rookie year on the main roster, but the match happened on SmackDown weeks before WrestleMania 26.
