WWE has signed some big names over the past couple of years. However, a former champion is surprised at his current position in the industry.
Some fans feel Matt Cardona could have a Cody Rhodes-style return to the Stamford-based promotion. However, Triple H and his management have so far held back on re-signing the star who was released by the company in 2020 after a 15-year tenure.
Cardona has taken over the independent circuit since his WWE release. He worked with AEW for a short time and focused on working on other promotions such as GCW, TNA, and MLW.
Speaking with Walkway To Fight Club, the former GCW World Champion expressed his frustration at not being signed by any major company for a full-time stint since his WWE release.
"Listen, I'll be completely honest. I don't know what the f*** is going on. I've done everything there is to do. I am legit shocked I have not gotten an offer from any company, and that's not me being egotistical. That's me being realistic. Like I've done all there is, what else can I possibly do? But I can't let this run be fuelled by bitterness or negativity. It was never, 'Oh, I gotta prove people wrong.' It was never that. It was, 'I've gotta prove myself right, I've gotta prove my fans right,' and I feel like I have done that. But I think the second you get bitter, the second you get angry is where you lose yourself, and I'm not gonna let this run be fuelled by negativity." [H/T - Wrestling Inc.]
Matt Cardona has indeed proven his fans right after his WWE release. He is currently one of the biggest names in the industry and will likely land a long-term contract with a top promotion when the time is right.
Matt Cardona wants to end his career in WWE
Matt Cardona has achieved a lot since leaving the Stamford-based wrestling promotion. The former champion believes that he is closer to a WWE world title reign right now than he was when he worked in the company.
Many fans are of the opinion that Cardona is capable of doing something similar to what Cody Rhodes has done since his return to the company. Speaking to Sports Illustrated, The Indie God noted that he wanted to end his career working for his former employer.
"I'm proud to be the 'Indie God,' I'm proud to be the face of GCW, but when it's all said and done, I want to end my career in WWE. I want to have another WrestleMania moment. I want to be in Madison Square Garden but as Matt Cardona. Zack Ryder is dead. I am so fortunate for Zack Ryder for the highs and the lows, the good and the bad, because it set me up for this. It prepared me for this," he added.
It would be great to see Cardona back in the company someday. Many big rivalries await him in the Stamford-based wrestling promotion.
