A former WWE star has decided to relinquish his title after having a reign of 2,263 days. The talent in question here is Mistico.
The Mexican luchador won the NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship in CMLL by defeating Ultimo Guerrero on August 21, 2018. His last defense of the title was against Volador Jr. at Lunes Clasico in July this year.
On the latest edition of the CMLL Informa, Mistico mentioned that his body is now closer in weight to a light heavyweight than a middleweight. Moreover, he added that he was worn out from multiple title defenses. The former Sin Cara in WWE also announced that he'll compete in the light heavyweight division going forward and challenge for the titles on offer.
CMLL will hold a tournament to crown the next World Historic Middleweight Champion after Mistico's major decision, though details haven't been disclosed as of this writing.
A current AEW star wants to clash against former WWE Superstar Mistico
MJF made his CMLL debut at the Viernes Espectacular show, defending his AEW American Championship (renamed again as the International Title) against Templario.
During the press conference preceding the event, The Salt of the Earth was asked about other CMLL stars that he would like to face inside the squared circle. The AEW star immediately brought up Mistico's name, teasing a bout between the two.
“Mistico. Outside of that, money talks. You want to see MJF here again, it either has to be the matchup of a lifetime or mucho dinero. I got better stuff to do, like count my money on Long Island, New York," MJF said.
Interestingly, Mistico has already made a few appearances under the AEW umbrella, with his last one coming during a tag team match on Collision in August 2024. He teamed up with Hologram to defeat Tony Nese and Ariya Daivari.
It remains to be seen if the former WWE star clashes against MJF whenever he makes his return to the Jacksonville-based promotion.
