WWE King & Queen of the Ring 2024 cemented Gunther as a main eventer after winning the tournament. However, The Ring General broke character after winning the match and praised Randy Orton.
Gunther returned to Monday Night RAW with a purpose, as he lost the Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn in Philadelphia. The Ring General vowed to become the next King of the Ring winner and defeated Sheamus, Kofi Kingston, and Jey Uso before advancing to the finals.
In the end, The Ring General defeated The Viper in Saudi Arabia and won the tournament. During an interview with Title Sports Network, Gunther broke character and praised Randy Orton after he scored a win over the veteran for the first time:
"Yes. I mean, it's been an absolute pleasure to be in the ring with somebody like Randy Orton. I think his resume speaks for itself and makes me very proud of myself to be able to overcome Randy Orton. I survived two RKOs basically and go out there and became King of the Ring," said The King General. (From 1:15 to 1:31)

Gunther came face-to-face against World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest on WWE RAW
Gunther spent nearly two years on WWE's main roster to revive the Intercontinental Championship. After The Ring General made new records with the title, Sami Zayn ended the legendary reign in Philadelphia, which allowed the star to go after the World Heavyweight Championship.
After winning the King of the Ring tournament in Saudi Arabia, The Ring General opened the show and spoke about his win. Later, World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest interrupted the star as they came face-to-face. The two exchanged words, led by another interruption from Drew McIntyre.
In the end, Drew McIntyre, Gunther, and Damian Priest left the ring, as Braun Strowman and JD McDonagh had a one-on-one match. McIntyre will face Priest for the title at WWE Clash at The Castle 2024, and the champion will eventually face Gunther in a title match at WWE SummerSlam 2024.
