Damian Priest has been on a meteoric rise in 2024. He won the Money in the Bank briefcase and then successfully cashed it in at WrestleMania 40 to become the World Heavyweight Champion.
He held the title for a few months until Gunther defeated him at SummerSlam, thanks to Finn Balor. Since then, The Ring General has proudly carried the world title. He had the chance to become the first-ever Crown Jewel Champion this past weekend but lost to Cody Rhodes.

Despite the loss, Gunther looked ready to move forward, and WWE was looking for his next challenger. Hence, on the red brand tonight, Seth Rollins, Damian Priest, Dominik Mysterio, and Sheamus competed in a number one contender's match for the championship.
Thanks to Bronson Reed's interruption in the match, Dominik Mysterio came close to winning when he hit a frog splash on Sheamus. However, Priest was nearby to break up the pinfall. Dom then hit Priest with a 619, but when he went for the frog splash, Priest caught him and hit the South of Heaven chokeslam to pick up the win.

It will be interesting to see what happens when these two men square off in the ring again.

If ever given a chance to change a storyline, Sunil would have booked Roman Reigns to end The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak instead of Brock Lesnar.
