Eric Bischoff was largely responsible for WCW's television ratings success in the 1990s. The former WCW executive recently gave an insight into Alex Wright's career with the company.

Wright, the son of legendary British wrestler Steve Wright, wrestled for WCW between 1994 and 2001. The 49-year-old held the Cruiserweight and World Television Championships. He also won the tag titles with Disco Inferno.

On his 83 Weeks podcast, Bischoff said Wright was supposed to be presented as a good guy. However, the German's dancing gimmick did not appeal to male fans:

"I think we were doing our best to make him a babyface," Bischoff stated. "But here's the problem: Alex was too good-looking. He was too young. Guys hated him. Girls may have found him attractive but guys f***ing hated him. He was too pretty, he had too much going on, and he was being shoved down their throat." [39:29 – 39:51]

Wright left WCW when former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon purchased the company in 2001. He was approached about joining WWE but rejected the opportunity.

Eric Bischoff on WCW's original plan for Alex Wright

During his WCW career, Alex Wright wrestled high-profile names including Arn Anderson, Chris Jericho, and Triple H. He also competed in a controversial match against Paul Roma at WCW SuperBrawl V in 1995.

Eric Bischoff admitted WCW's creative team did not intend for Wright to receive negative reactions from crowds:

"You're bringing out a character that looks like he just walked off the cover of GQ Magazine and he's out there dancing for the girls, who are paid to scream and act like fangirls. The guys in the audience were just like, 'F**k that,' so I think the gimmick worked against him. To your [host Conrad Thompson] question, he wasn't getting heat because he was designed to get heat. That wasn't part of the plan." [40:02 – 40:28]

Wright now owns a pro wrestling school in Germany. In 2023, the veteran wrestler confirmed he would be interested in returning to the ring if WWE made him an offer.
