A high-profile match between Goldberg and Hulk Hogan in the 1990s in the now-defunct WCW was apparently an act of desperation, a WWE veteran has claimed. According to him, it was poor booking that led to the bout.
At the peak of the Monday Night Wars between WWE RAW and WCW Nitro in the late 1990s, Eric Bischoff set up a match between Da Man and Hogan. While such a match was expected to take place at a pay-per-view or at least a special event, it happened on a normal edition of Nitro in July 1998. Vince Russo, who booked WCW and WWE at different times during the ratings war, has now claimed it was a result of reckless planning.
Speaking on Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing with Russo, the WWE veteran stated:
"I assume that the reason Bischoff had that type of a match because he was feeling desperation. I mean, that's what I would assume. And you know, again, bro, who put himself in a spot of desperation? He did. So if I was in that spot of desperation, Chris; perhaps, I would have done the same thing. But I would have never booked myself in a spot of desperation in the first place." [2:07 onwards]

The former WWE writer thinks the situation could never have been salvaged in a single night
According to Vince Russo, the war between WCW and the Stamford-based promotion could not have been dealt with without long-term booking.
Adding to his previous comments on Writing with Russo, Vince Russo explained that even when he was in WCW, he was not doing anything without being careful.
"At WCW when the tables were turned, and, you know, I go there, and RAW was kicking our a**; I wasn't doing anything out of desperation because I knew this was a long term plan, and it was gonna take time. There's nothing you can do in one night that's gonna turn anything around; it doesn't work that way," he added. [2:36 onwards]
Despite WCW's efforts, the result of the war did end up in the Stamford-based promotion's favor.
