WWE is making headlines this weekend ahead of the 37th annual SummerSlam Premium Live Event. The new era is moving forward and one of the next big events shall be the Netflix switch-over for the red brand. The company has just re-signed one of its biggest names, and new details on future plans have seemingly come to light.
Michael Cole joined World Wrestling Entertainment in 1997 and is one of the longest-tenured stars in the company. A broadcast journalism major from Syracuse University, Cole has done commentary and interviews on almost every show, while also working behind-the-scenes to train and mentor other on-air talents. The 57-year-old has even wrestled on a few occasions and was promoted to an executive role in 2020.
The Voice of WWE will remain with the Stamford-based promotion for the foreseeable future. A new in-depth profile from The Ringer notes that Cole signed a new contract with the company back in the spring.
There was recent speculation on another shake-up to commentary teams for SmackDown's move from FOX to USA Network on September 13 and for RAW's move to Netflix on January 1, 2025. However, this latest report reveals that the four-time Slammy Award winner will stay on the red brand as its play-by-play announcer unless plans change down the line.

Cole returned to the SmackDown announcer's desk in 2019 for the first time in six years. He then went back to the red brand in August 2023 and then began working both shows as an official at Endeavor. FOX and USA Network both wanted the veteran talent to be the face of the product. Cole left the blue brand this past January and has been on RAW alongside Pat McAfee since.
Triple H issues statement on new WWE on-air personality
World Wrestling Entertainment recently hired Joe Tessitore of ESPN and ABC fame. The veteran of 31 years has previously worked on Monday Night Football, as well as Top Rank Boxing, among other shows.
Tessitore will begin SmackDown play-by-play later this summer. In the official signing announcement, the 53-year-old praised Michael Cole as the greatest to ever sit in the commentary chair. He also described Cole and Pat McAfee as "just magical together." Triple H mentioned how the company was excited for the lifelong viewer to join Cole and the rest of the team.
“Whether it’s a World Title fight that’s got the globe buzzing or a college football rivalry that’s grabbed the nation’s attention, Joe’s voice provides that big event feel each time he is behind the microphone. We’re excited for Joe to join legendary WWE broadcaster, Michael Cole and our esteemed announce team, bringing his signature energy and meticulous preparation to our WWE telecasts each week," Triple H said.
