Many WWE stars use social media to promote their on-screen personas and give fans an insight into their real lives away from the ring. In an exclusive interview, Jerry Sags gave his honest take on the current generation exposing the wrestling business.
Sags, 59, is best known for being a member of The Nasty Boys alongside Brian Knobbs. In the 1990s, they won the WCW World Tag Team Championship three times and the WWE Tag Team Championship once.
Speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, Sags claimed ticket sales are down because fans know too much about the industry:
"I know a lot of the younger guys, and even older guys now, things are out there, they reveal everything. I'm totally against that. I'm not a social media guy, don't have none, don't watch none, don't listen to none. Couldn't care less. It comes across when you're trying to draw money and there's no people in the seats, they know why." [1:16 – 1:45]
In the video above, Sags explained how wrestlers received punishments behind the scenes if they disclosed details that fans were not supposed to know.
Jerry Sags thinks the "magic" in WWE and wrestling has gone
In 1985, Jerry Sags began his wrestling career as a referee. At the time, people involved in the business were instructed not to give away too much information about how wrestling really works.
Sags added that legendary WWE manager Bobby Heenan once told him that "magic" no longer exists in wrestling:
"If they're telling all the stuff over the internet, what the hell is somebody gonna turn on the TV for? Or go to a show to watch it? Or watch the pay-per-view? Bobby Heenan said, it's one of the last things he ever told me, he goes, 'All the magician's tricks are out.' What good's a magician if everybody knows the tricks? Who would have sweat to see [Harry] Houdini if they knew how he could escape? If a magician's tricks are exposed, nobody cares." [2:11 – 2:40]
In the same interview, Sags recalled how Rick and Scott Steiner played a major role in his career.
