Sami Zayn will challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship on the October 7 episode of WWE RAW. Vince Russo, WWE's former head writer, does not think Zayn's on-screen persona makes sense.
On April 6, Zayn embraced his underdog status when he defeated Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania XL. Six months on, the Canadian no longer wants to be viewed as second-favorite heading into matches against the likes of The Ring General.
Russo discussed Gunther vs. Zayn with host Dr. Chris Featherstone on Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing With Russo. Addressing Zayn's character, the veteran writer questioned the logic behind the RAW star's current storyline:
"From what I've seen of Sami and what Sami has done and how Sami has presented himself, it seems like he doesn't wanna be that guy," Russo said. "Bro, remember he cut a promo a couple of months ago, 'I'm not the underdog anymore. I don't wanna be [the underdog].' And then, you know, calling Gunther a coward. Why wouldn't you wanna be that guy? I don't understand." [12:42 – 13:05]

How Vince Russo would book Sami Zayn
Over the last two years, Sami Zayn has cemented his status as one of the top good guys in WWE.
Vince Russo has not always been a fan of Zayn's babyface persona. However, he thinks the former honorary Bloodline member's character evoked more emotion when he approached matches like an underdog:
"This ain't real, man," Russo continued. "This ain't real. I'm with you a thousand percent. If you were that [underdog] guy, you'd be more over, bro, but thinking you're Joe Tough Guy and then you're gonna go in there and get beat, that does nothing for you, man." [13:06 – 13:25]
On November 2, WWE Crown Jewel will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will face the winner of Gunther vs. Zayn to determine the inaugural WWE Crown Jewel Champion.
