The Undertaker retained the Hardcore Championship against Spike Dudley on the December 10, 2001, episode of WWE RAW. More than two decades on, The Deadman reflected on how he initially refused to attack his opponent post-match.

The WWE icon secured the win via pinfall after planting Dudley back-first against a trash can with a Last Ride. Moments later, he sent the 150-pound star crashing to the ringside floor with a Chokeslam over the top rope.

On Six Feet Under w/Mark Calaway, The Undertaker made it clear he had to be persuaded into performing the risky move:

"I didn't wanna do that. I understand why, some people's niche, that's what they do. I don't wanna hurt you. I can press slam you and make you land on your feet and it'll still [look good], but that was nasty." [41:34 – 41:52]

Spike Dudley recently said on Maven's YouTube channel that he came up with the Chokeslam spot. The Undertaker repeatedly rejected the idea before Bubba Ray Dudley convinced him the move would be safe.

The Undertaker on Mick Foley's pain threshold

In 1998, The Deadman famously pushed Mick Foley's Mankind character off the top of the Hell in a Cell structure before Chokeslamming him through a cell panel. He also threw his opponent onto a set of thumbtacks later in the match.

Comparing the Spike Dudley incident to his battle with Foley, The Undertaker explained why the use of tacks inside Hell in a Cell made sense:

"The tacks worked with Mick because Mick's whole deal was how much pain he could take. He could take more pain than you can dish out, right? That's kind of always the way I looked at his character, and he was willing to take 80 percent punishment just to dish out 20 percent." [42:22 – 42:47]

The WWE Hall of Famer also revealed he did not want the company's decision-makers to send an AEW star down to developmental.
