What’s the story?
Jim Ross has announced in an interview with Fox Sports that he has signed a multi-year deal with the WWE.
In case you didn’t know...
Ross’ history with the WWE was that of a flawless resume. While battling ailments to his body throughout the years, he has remained passionate and dedicated to World Wrestling Entertainment.

At one point, he held the position of Talent Relations lead and brought in several talents to the company. He’s probably more famous for reeling in Stone Cold Steve Austin back to the company after he had left following a lengthy period of frustration.

Despite Ross’ tenure, a WWE 2K14 panel featuring WWE legends forced Vince McMahon’s hand and he had to fire Ross over the performance.
It was never confirmed, but Ric Flair’s actions, along with the panel being a complete disaster, had reportedly led to Jim Ross’ departure. Several years later, Ross made his return to the company at WrestleMania 33. He called, what most believe, was The Undertaker’s last match, against Roman Reigns.
The heart of the matter
Jim Ross’ comeback had inspired a lot of questions about his future with the company. Ross answered all of those questions in an interview with Fox Sports.
He was quoted as saying:
”I signed a two-year contract (with WWE) that has a specific number of dates that I’m obligated to work, which I think is good for me, so, if the team needs me to play, to work more than they anticipated because they need it, I’m in.”
Ross also mentioned that this will not interfere with his commitment to announce New Japan Pro Wrestling matches for AXS TV.
What’s next?
As Jim Ross said, he will be working select dates moving forward. It’s safe to assume that they could be the big four pay-per-views: Survivor Series, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble and WrestleMania.
This does coincide with the rumour that Michael Cole wants to move into a bigger role behind the scenes, leaving a spot open at the commentary desk for Ross. It’s well-documented that Ross is a team player who has been known to do what is best for the business.
Author’s take
There is nothing better while watching a WWE event than hearing Ross’ voice call the action.
It’s simply something about his voice and the way he can call a match that soothes the soul of a wrestling fan. Even if he only announces a few matches a year, that is perfectly fine with me.
The important part is that he’s back in the WWE, and fans should relish the opportunity to hear him call matches as much as possible.
