Last night, John Cena appeared on the WWE RAW on Netflix premiere, where his farewell tour began. He announced his participation in the 2025 Men's Royal Rumble match on February 1. The promo was short and sweet, but it may not have achieved the desired outcome.
Tommy Dreamer noted on the Busted Open podcast that Cena repeatedly said that a 17th World Title win in 2025 is less likely, and this only made fans want to see it even more.
The Greatest of All Time stated in his promo that he had not won a match in so many years and that his farewell tour's purpose was simply to have a good time. He reiterated this sentiment post-show during the press conference, too. Unless this was WWE's intent, with there being plans to give him one last world championship run, this past Monday's segment was a risky move, Dreamer felt:
"John Cena took you on — he even said 'never say never. I'm gonna need a miracle because here's why. I haven't won a match in how long. The only way I could do it if I went and won the Royal Rumble.' Listen to how those people reacted. He was doing it [with the intention of] there is no way I would even do it. The people are willing to see it happen. He took you on this emotional ride where you're like, 'Yeah, John. You can do it,'" Tommy Dreamer said. [From 18:51 to 19:28]
During the post-show press conference, John Cena also pointed out that it would not be fair to younger talents if he waltzed in and asked for another world title run. However, it seems the fans do not care about that and would rather see him end his WWE career with one last reign at the top of the industry.
Will John Cena win the 2025 Royal Rumble and challenge Cody Rhodes or Gunther?
A recent report revealed that WWE's working plan for John Cena is for him to face Cody Rhodes. However, this is not a lock. Meanwhile, many fans have opined that Cena facing Gunther is a more intriguing contest.
WWE personality Sam Roberts feels that The American Nightmare does not need a win over John Cena, so that match probably is not the way to go because Roberts is also not very keen on witnessing Cena end Cody's reign. However, the analyst added that the 47-year-old should get one last run with the WWE Title, so that he can put someone massively over on his way out.
It is worth noting that Cena's former rival, CM Punk, is also on an upward climb this Road To WrestleMania. The Best in the World wants to main event The Show of Shows. On RAW, he called out Cody Rhodes and Gunther.
Interestingly, CM Punk also hopes to step into the ring and mix it up with John Cena one last time this year.
