A legendary wrestler has announced his retirement at just 47 years of age, marking the end of an era. The star also revealed the date of his last match, leaving the wrestling world saddened as they don't have a lot of time to relish him.

While millions of talents have entered the squared circle all across the world, only a few have gone on to leave a mark on the business. Hiroshi Tanahashi undoubtedly belongs in the second category. The 47-year-old never joined the biggest pro wrestling company in the world but is still known by wrestling fans all around the globe for his work in NJPW. Tanahashi has won numerous championships in his illustrious career which started in the late 1990s.

After entertaining the fans for over 25 years, The Ace is in the twilight of his career. He recently announced that will have his retirement match at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 on January 4, 2026, and thus Tanahashi will be 49 when he hangs up his boots. The announcement was made at the NJPW King of Pro-Wrestling event.

Legendary wrestler Hiroshi Tanahashi also serves as the president of NJPW

In addition to being one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all time, Hiroshi Tanahashi also holds an official position as the 47-year-old is the president of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. The Ace dedicated his career to the Japanese promotion and is expected to continue working with them after hanging up his boots.

Tanahashi also recently reunited with Kenny Omega and the duo could join forces next year if the AEW star is medically cleared to wrestle. Omega and Tanahashi may face The Young Bucks at Wrestle Dynasty 2025 if all goes well.

Tanahashi's retirement tour is expected to be filled with more such historic matches. The 47-year-old is widely considered one of the greatest Japanese wrestlers of all time, along with Kazuchika Okada. Fans are also hoping to see The Rainmaker stand across the ring from The Ace one last time.
