A legendary wrestler has now hung up their wrestling boots. This brings an end to a 27-year wrestling career that saw them become a huge name in the community.
Sumie Sakai is best known for being the first-ever Women of Honor Champion in Ring of Honor. She also has the longest-ever reign with the title, beating out everyone else. While the star has not been involved with the company since it was bought out by Tony Khan, she remains one of the biggest legends in the company's history.
Sakai ended her career in a match at NJPW Battle in the Valley this Saturday Night. She teamed with EVIL and SHO to face Hiromu Takahashi, Mayu Iwatani, and Yuka Sakazaki. There was a moment when Sakai appeared to have won the match, but her teammates turned on her. She faced all three of her opponents alone and took three finishers, taking Takahashi's Time Bomb to take the pin and lose.
The wrestler ended her career with the match and got serenaded with "Thank you, Sumi" chants, and the locker room came out to greet her.
The legendary wrestler ended her 27-year wrestling career and retired at 53 years of age. The company honored her with a 10-bell salute as well.
