A legendary name believes Rey Mysterio could have signed with All Elite Wrestling when the promotion started in 2019. He further noted that that move would have forever altered Dominik Mysterio's career. The current LWO member was part of the first-ever All In event in September 2018, which led to the creation of AEW the following year.

Earlier that year, Rey Mysterio also competed in the Men's Royal Rumble match at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was his first appearance for World Wrestling Entertainment in three years. But it was a one-off. Later that year, at the Greatest Royal Rumble event in Saudi Arabia, the WWE Hall of Famer made another appearance in the titular Battle Royal. By September, it was confirmed that he had signed a deal with the Stamford-based company.

On the special occasion of Mysterio's 50th birthday, Tommy Dreamer discussed the luchador legend on the latest episode of the Busted Open podcast. He listed the number of things Rey Mysterio did following the luchador legend's WWE exit in 2015:

"But went out there, was hustling," Tommy Dreamer noted about the Hall of Famer's work after his WWE exit in 2015. "Went back to AAA, tried to helping build that. He had built a bunch of other wrestling companies. You had said, worked the first All In."

Dreamer noted that if WWE had not offered that contract to Rey in an alternate timeline, there was a legitimate possibility that the latter would have joined All Elite Wrestling. If that had happened, the veteran wondered what could have happened to Dominik Mysterio:

"And I think, probably, if WWE didn't make that offer—if you think Rey Mysterio being in AEW wouldn't have been a thing, that could have definitely happened. That's an alternate timeline to investigate. Then Dominik probably wouldn't have been in WWE." [From 6:06 to 6:36]

Dominik Mysterio is one of the top WWE Superstars today, and he manages to garner nuclear heat from the live crowds in every arena he goes to. Based on a recent reaction, though, wrestling veteran Jim Cornette is fairly certain 'Dirty' Dom could turn babyface if the company wanted him to.

Will Rey Mysterio retire from in-ring competition next year?

On December 11, Rey Mysterio turned 50. He mentioned this number last year when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. He stated that turning 50 would mark the beginning of the end of his in-ring career. However, more recently, he noted that he is listening to his body.

Between August and November 2023, after getting inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, Mysterio reigned as the United States Champion. It remains to be seen where he goes from here.
