Rey Mysterio is one of the most mobile and high-flying superstars to ever wrestle in WWE. The mighty luchador has faced countless opponents since 2002 and has landed his highly acrobatic moves with both on-screen impact and safety. However, there was a time when a botch by him resulted in a WWE legend getting seriously injured.
Rey Mysterio recently appeared on the Jaxxon Podcast and shared a backstage rehearsal secret of his first time working with The Undertaker. While he had made considerable headway into WWE by then, he ended up breaking one of The Deadman’s bones while practicing with him for the first time.
“Not to mention that the first time I wrestled him (The Undertaker), I ended up breaking his orbital socket. I was scared sh**less… I do this move where I spring on the top rope and I jump and I pretty much sit on your chest and bring you down. I think what happened is when I sat down and we both fell, my a** went like this, and it pushed up against his face. I’m not that big."
Rey Mysterio noted that this accident happened because of his nervousness to perform, and an intense need to make The Undertaker acknowledge and like him.
"Imagine being the first time you’re stepping in the ring with him, as a legend that he is, I just wanted to make sure that my work was good enough to please him to say, ‘Aye, let me work with him again’ and I wanted to make sure that I didn’t hurt. We protect each other. We gotta feed, we gotta fight, we gotta live to fight another day and we gotta make sure we’re good. But with him… I was really tense.” [From 58:18 to 59:34]
Rey Mysterio said that he usually has some butterflies in his stomach whenever he steps into the ring. However, he said that he was feeling thrice as much pressure when he worked with The Undertaker for the first time. Interestingly, while he spoke about breaking The Phenom’s bones, he also commented on why he broke his tag team run with his son, Dominik Mysterio.
The real reason behind the split between Rey Mysterio and Dirty Dom
Speaking on the same podcast, Rey Mysterio relayed that his tag team with Dominik Mysterio ended because of creative reasons. The WWE Hall of Famer noted that the creative team identified that Dom had a very different wrestling style than him, and he also had very different career goals.
Thus, the team of WWE writers, Triple H, Bruce Prichard, and others decided to split the team when Edge formed a new heel faction. The decision, however, has yielded great results so far. Dominik Mysterio has really gained a new identity and loads of praise from several WWE veterans like John Cena for his heel work.
Rey Mysterio said that the story also worked with how it was sold, taking inspiration from real life where kids like to build their own paths. Notably, the father-son duo is on the same brand now after the WWE Draft just around the time when the mighty luchador is nearing retirement. It would be interesting to see how they clash in the upcoming days of Monday Night RAW.
