Former WWE referee Rita Chatterton recently recalled how Vince McMahon offered her a spot on a major show during their first conversation.
Chatterton, WWE's first female referee, worked for the company between 1984 and 1986. In 2022, McMahon reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the former official after she filed a lawsuit against him over a sexual assault allegation from 1986.
In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda Wrestling's Senior Editor Bill Apter, Chatterton said legendary wrestler Blackjack Mulligan put her in touch with WWE. She then contacted the promotion's former booker, George Scott, who told McMahon to call her.

"He says, 'Rita, Vince McMahon here,' and I froze," Chatterton stated. "I'm like [staring at the phone], and I hear him saying, 'Hello? Hello? Are you there?' I'm like, 'Oh, yeah, I'm here, I'm here.' He says, 'Rita, I talked to George Scott yesterday. He was very impressed with you, Blackjack Mulligan was very impressed with you, and I wanna get some film on you. Can you be in Madison Square Garden on Saturday?'" [9:30 – 9:56]

Known as The World's Most Famous Arena, New York's Madison Square Garden has been synonymous with WWE for generations. Despite having little time to prepare, Chatterton jumped at the chance to referee on the show:
"'I mean, two days from now? It's Friday.' He's like, 'Yeah, is that a problem?' 'No, sir, I'll be there.' Two days later, I was in Madison Square Garden and that's where my career started," she said. [9:57 – 10:10]
Chatterton officiated Blackjack Mulligan vs. Moondog Spot in her first match as a WWE referee.

In January, former WWE employee Janel Grant accused Vince McMahon of sexual trafficking. McMahon denied the allegations before resigning as a board member of WWE's parent company TKO "out of respect."
Chatterton did not want to give her opinion when asked about Grant's claims.
"Yeah, I have no comment on it, you know? Yeah, I have no comment," she said. [10:33 – 10:38]
Former wrestler Mario Mancini previously revealed that only he and WWE icon Andre the Giant knew about Chatterton's allegation against McMahon in 1986.
