Sami Zayn's run in WWE only got better a year after his organic rise to main event status. Although he did not retain that spot at WrestleMania in 2024, his Intercontinental Championship win is not something to sleep on. The Underdog from the Underground rose to the occasion and ended Gunther's record-setting reign at 666 days.

Perhaps one of the roster's talents who was best utilized by Triple H and his creative team in the aftermath of The Showcase of Immortals is Zayn. He was booked against Chad Gable in a feud, which certainly is a worthy candidate for the top storylines of 2024.

At Money in the Bank last month, Sami Zayn humbled Bron Breakker with a clean victory over the rising WWE Superstar. At SummerSlam this past Saturday, though, Breakker had Zayn's number. Taking to X, The Underdog from the Underground penned a heartfelt note about his reign and shared a picture with his son:

"This Intercontinental Championship reign has come to an end. It may have been the most special title run of my career…for personal reasons," Sami Zayn wrote.

How this affects Sami Zayn's spot on WWE RAW bears watching. Up until most recently, he was consistently booked in multiple main event matches on the flagship show.

Kevin Owens was disappointed with their WWE storylines after WrestleMania 39

A year before Sami Zayn ended The Ring General's historic reign on The Grandest Stage of Them All, he had ended another. Along with Kevin Owens, the two defeated The Usos at WrestleMania 39, bringing the latter's reign to a close at 622 days. Their bout also made history for being the second tag team main event on The Grandest Stage of Them All since the very first edition of the event.

Everything that transpired after WrestleMania 39 was not how Kevin Owens had envisioned it to be. He believed a lot of the things they did went under the radar. Here's what the former Universal Champion told Alex McCarthy of Mail Sport earlier this year:

"Me and Sami worked our a**es off to give main events on RAW every week that had people going wild and we succeeded, and I'm not one to toot my own horn, I really am not, but I think Sami and I did a lot of special things as champions that went under the radar because they weren't on pay-per-views," Owens said. "They weren't under the big bright lights. They were usually on RAW."

Owens concluded that their reign was not on par with what The Usos were able to do during theirs. After dropping the titles, he and Zayn split up as he was transferred to WWE SmackDown.
