The Rock has opened up about why he did not face Roman Reigns in the main event of WWE WrestleMania XL. The dream match seemed destined to happen this year, but it was not meant to be.
Speaking on WWE's WrestleMania XL: Behind the Curtain documentary released today on YouTube, The Final Boss admitted that he contacted Ari Emanuel, Nick Khan, and Triple H following the negative reaction from the fans due to Cody Rhodes seemingly being pushed out of his rematch against The Tribal Chief at WWE WrestleMania XL.
The Brahma Bull noted that many fans would have enjoyed the match, but he didn't want to disappoint those who were invested in The American Nightmare's story.
"They are going to love this idea of Rock and Roman and we are going to tell an amazing story. Hopefully this will be the first chapter of a few. We could do that. However, I said that my gut says, I said Ari, Nick, and Triple H, my gut says that I don't like, even if it is a segment of fans, I don't like that they are upset," he said.
The Great One added that the fans being upset really got to him, and he wanted to make sure they got what they wanted at WWE WrestleMania XL.
"And that really bugged the sh** out of me, and it is not how I've operated my entire career. I don't like it, and I knew that the choice essentially was mine. It was either we truck through this and we make this main event, or we don't. And I went with the latter, and I told those guys here is what I believe we should do. I believe we should go Roman vs. Cody, will Cody finish his story? And take care of those fans because it is critical and important. Those 'Cody Crybabies' who I called them," he added.
Former WWE writer on what made The Rock the ultimate icon
Vince Russo recently praised The Rock and noted that he stood out from the rest during the peak of his WWE career.
Speaking on this week's episode of Sportskeeda Wrestling's Legion of RAW show, Russo noted that The Brahma Bull always looked the part. He added that The Rock was a great promo and backed up his words with solid performances in the ring.
"[The] Rock was as cool as [The] Rock could get. Everybody wanted to be The Rock. And what did that come down to? It came down to wardrobe (...) [The] Rock used to buy $500 shirts and wear them once. You never saw The Rock wearing the same thing. It came down to his appearance, it would come to he had a new catchphrase every single week, [and] he worked on his promos. He was the coolest guy on the block that he wanted to be. And he could back it up." [From 18:05 onwards]
