The Undertaker protected his on-screen persona by staying in character for almost his entire 30-year WWE career. In a recent podcast episode, The Deadman revealed why he once broke character while wrestling at a live event.

On April 19, 2009, The Undertaker joined forces with Triple H to defeat Legacy (Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, and Ted DiBiase Jr.) in Vienna, Austria. During the match, the WWE icon poured water on himself and sprinted up and down the ring apron before tagging in. A video of the moment went viral online and often resurfaces all these years later.

The Undertaker discussed the incident on the latest episode of his Six Feet Under w/Mark Calaway podcast. Explaining his behavior that night, the Hall of Famer said he wanted to teach DiBiase Jr. and Rhodes how to perform a hot tag:

"No one ever sees me like that, so they're losing their minds, like, 'What the hell has just got into Undertaker?'" The Phenom stated. "But that's just me teaching and trying to [explain], 'This is important.' It's the little things. I'm not doing anything but I'm doing everything. I'm making this tag that he's just sold. I'm making it mean something and, when I get in, this energy that I'm using here is the way you need to feed my comeback to make it keep rolling on." [5:50 – 6:22]

The three-on-two handicap match took place during a WWE WrestleMania Revenge Tour in Europe. Two weeks earlier, The Undertaker defeated Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25 in a match widely viewed as one of the best in WWE history.

The Undertaker compares WWE live events and TV tapings

While televised WWE shows revolve around storyline developments, non-televised live events usually focus on in-ring action and entertaining the audience.

The Undertaker added that live events also allow wrestlers to test new things without the pressure of knowing people are watching at home:

"That's the only time I really got to, not lose the character, but I would get out of character to let people experience what it is to do certain things." [6:43 – 6:58]

The Deadman rarely appeared at live events after reducing his in-ring schedule in 2010. In his final non-televised match, he teamed with Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns to defeat Baron Corbin, Elias, and Kevin Owens on July 7, 2018.
