Bret Hart sometimes receives criticism from WWE fans due to his candid views on the wrestling business. The Undertaker, one of Hart's legendary former opponents, believes the two-time Hall of Famer is entitled to say what he likes.
In 2000, Hart was forced to retire from in-ring competition after suffering a serious concussion against Goldberg at WCW Starrcade 1999. The Hitman has repeatedly badmouthed Da Man in recent years. He has also described modern-day wrestling as "phony" compared to past generations.
On his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker addressed some fans' claims that Hart has a "sour" view of wrestling:
"Everybody's entitled to their opinion. Just because you don't agree, it doesn't mean that you have the right to go, 'Ah, man, he's sour.' He's not sour. It's just not the way he did it. I've had to deal with that. I've had to kind of learn and accept the fact that the business has evolved, and although they don't do it the way maybe I would have done it, it's the way it's done now." Bret Hart and The Undertaker were two of WWE's star attractions in the 1990s. One of their most notable matches occurred at SummerSlam 1997 when Shawn Michaels refereed Hart's WWE Title win over The Deadman.
The Undertaker's message to Bret Hart's critics
In 2020, The Undertaker retired from wrestling after 30 years in WWE. The 2022 Hall of Famer now shares stories about his career on his podcast and at speaking events.
The Undertaker has a lot of respect for Bret Hart and believes some fans need to "lighten up" when The Hitman gives his wrestling opinions:
"Obviously it worked well for him, and he did take a lot of pride, and still does, he takes a lot of pride in being a wrestler and telling stories and having matches the way that he did. People have gotta lighten up and not worry so much about what people say. Everybody's entitled to an opinion. You don't have to agree with somebody." [50:20 – 50:46]
Hart made headlines again in 2023 when he reflected on his front-row experience at the inaugural WWE Clash at the Castle event nearly two years ago. The Canadian said current stars failed to make wrestling look believable because they slapped their legs while executing moves.
