Vince McMahon resigned as a board member of WWE's parent company TKO in January after former employee Janel Grant accused him of sexual assault. Vince Russo, WWE's head writer in the late 1990s, thinks everyone should wait to hear both sides of the story.
On September 25, a six-part docuseries about McMahon will be available to stream on Netflix. Ahead of the documentary's release, several media organizations have asked Russo to disclose details about his former boss.
Speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling host Dr. Chris Featherstone, Russo explained on Writing With Russo why he is reluctant to criticize McMahon:
"I've been contacted, bro, by media outlets and news outlets and stuff because now the Netflix thing is coming out. 'Vince, we wanna interview you. We want you to watch it. We want to interview you.' And I'm like, 'Bro...' Chris, you know me, everybody's got a price, okay? But I make it clear to them, 'Guys, if you're just looking for somebody to come on there and bury Vince, I'm not gonna do that,' because, again, Chris, you and I have had the conversation, the dude is innocent until proven guilty." Vince Russo refuses to "bury" Vince McMahon
In 1999, Vince Russo abruptly left WWE after Vince McMahon advised him to prioritize work and hire a nanny to look after his children.
Russo added that he is happy to discuss his experiences working with the former WWE Chairman. However, he wants to reserve judgment about any allegations until the truth comes to light:
"Allegations, especially in professional wrestling, run rampant, so if you're looking for me to just come on there and shovel dirt on him, I said, 'I'm not going to do that,'" Russo continued. "You wanna know about my experiences? You wanna ask me questions? Did I see any traces or anything like that? I said, 'That's fine, but I'm not [burying Vince McMahon].'" [3:16 – 3:37]
The Netflix series, titled Mr. McMahon, is executive produced by Bill Simmons and Tiger King director Chris Smith. According to Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer, some within WWE are "not happy" with how McMahon is portrayed.
