Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently spoke about how he opened some doors for the company. He discussed the time he convinced former WWE star Sable to get into the ring.
Sable started her career as a valet for then-husband Marc Mero. However, her popularity skyrocketed, and Vince McMahon decided to have her wrestle. The star went on to have a stellar career, winning the Women's Championship and featuring on the cover of a famous magazine.
This week on The Coach & Bro Show, available exclusively on Backstage Pass, Vince Russo detailed that he wanted someone to represent WWE on the Howard Stern Show. This was a time when wrestlers were not invited to the program. The veteran writer decided to have Sable get into the ring because he was sure that Stern would love to have her on his show.
"You know during that time Howard Stern was the be-all and end-all. Howard Stern was not going to have wrestlers on his show. This was before any wrestlers appeared on Stern's show (...) My thought was if he's not gonna bring a male wrestler on his show, he'll bring Sable on his show. So I had the conversation with her. This was not on her radar. I was like, 'Listen, this is what I'm thinking. You could open doors that perhaps some of the men can't.' She got right to training with Marc [Mero] every single day. That's why." [From 42:35 onwards]
Fortunately for Russo, things turned out in his favor, and Sable had a memorable career in the company. However, the 56-year-old was surrounded by controversy and even sued the global juggernaut at one point. Later, she married WWE veteran and 10-time World Champion Brock Lesnar.
